At yesterday morning's tide the Waipara made her maiden effort as a tug in this li.ubor, by taking out the Dart cutter over the bar', which service—the little vessel being ..quite light, and the bar good—she performed in a perfectly satisfactory manner.
The Southland made two trips across the bar, one to tow out the Glengarry schooner, leaving for Greymouth, and "the Lucy and Adelaide for Newcastle.
The Kennedy left Westport for Nelson on the 3rd January, and experienced strong S.W. winds to Cape Farewell, and thence to Nelson', heavy SW. gale. Arrived at Nelson at 10 a.m. on the 4th. On account of the inclemency of the weather, she did not commence to load till Wednesday, January 8, when she was swung for adjusting of compasses. Left Nelson on Thursday, January 9, at 10.30 a.m., arriving at the Buller at 11 a.m. yesterday.' Experienced strong S.W. winds the whole passage. The fine 800 ton ship, Queen Bee, had i arrived in Nelson from England, with about thirty passengers, and will load home with ■wool. The three-masted schooner, Margaret Campbell with coal, from Newcastle, which was lying two or three days in our roadstead. had also reached Nelson. We are indebted to the courtesy of Mr Creagh, chief-officer, foliate copies of the Melbourne and Sydney papers which had come to hand per Gothenburg. The Melbourne Argus has the following account of a very odd species of ship-abduc-tion : —lt has been ascertained that the barque John Fyston, chartered to load wheat at Adelaide for London, but which Captain Wynn, the master and part owner, has run away with, has loaded sandlewood at Freon a charter for Yokohama and Shanghai. An agent followed the ship to 1 remantle, to recover her for the owners but the barque had sailed before his arrival. We learn from Melbourne that the Nightingale was to leave that port on the 28th.
