COMMERCIAL.
The West Coast Times reports of the Hokitika markets as follows :—Business during the week has worn an exteeding quiet aspect. This, according to custom, is invariably the case for the first week in the new year, and not unfrequently the second too, therefore anticipated. The incessant rain continues to act detrimental to business, which has been confined to small parcels for town trade requirements. Shipments have come forward on a very limitod scale, in no instance affecting the market; breadstuffs only have re ceived any attention. There has been but very trifling addition Jto the stock of flour during the week ; in' the absence of later advices from Australia than the 21st ult., the market continues very firm, and last quotations remain unaltered, viz., best Adelaide, £24 ; Tasmanian, £2O per ton ; should the slightest demand spring up holders are confident of improving these figures. Oats show in favor of holders, having improved 6d per bushel ; stocks are working very low, there is a strong disposition to hold for a higher price, with every prospect of success. Bran can be quoted at 6d per bushel advance, which must be augmented to pay the importer. Chaff has slightly improved. New potatoes have sold at .£22 and are scarce. In other staples there has been no movement.
