COMMERCIAL.

Wesitort Times Office, January 4. Tho amount of revenue received at the -Custom Ilonse for import duties this day was £6O 3s Gd, muting the total amount for tho week £794 lis 9d. Considering that this is a fair five days only, New Tear's Day havinf been obsorved as a close holiday, -it shows a Tery -satisfactory condition of tho business of tho port. In private transactions, tho immense amonnt of gold announced as awaiting transport by the next escort from Charleston and the various more or less authentic rumors of new discoveries in different directions in our immediate vicinity, have tended to induce a more hopeful tone in commercial circles than has latterly prevailed, although there is no marked advance to record in any of the ■af'Cnary staples,

The Argm of the 21th ult., reports fis follows of the Melbourne markets :—ln the import markets business has maintained an aspect of great quietness to-day; dealers in almost every instance, having sc't their faces against any further purchases before the new Tear sets in, unless actually forced to buy, do not operate. In brcadstuffs there is nothing to report, and all that can be said is that prices are unaltered. Victorian flour is offered at £IG 10s to £l7. Wheat is quoted 6s 9d to 7s, but no sales have come under our notice. Very extreme rates are demanded for Tasmanian oats ; a parcel of 3000 bushels of which was quitted at close on 4s 3d. Maize is very firm at 4s for parcels, and up to 4s 3d is asked for trade lots. Wo note a fair inquiry for malt, and we hear of some 4400 bushels having been placed with the trade at lis 3d. Plantation coffee has found buyers at 10£ d, for best samples. At auction, a line of 580 boxes of Palmatine candles, in sound condition, was disposed of at llf d. A parcel of twenty-five bales of Calcutta woolp.icls realised 3s Gd. Inquiries for dark brandy have been experienced on Sydney account, and we understand that 7s has been freely olfered for fine 18G5 dark Martell's. For trade parcels of Pyass's stout, we learn that as much as 8s Gd is obtained. Sales of Java rice to a considerable extent have been effected, .and holders of the small stocks now remaining on hand have raised their price to £3O. WESTPOET .WHOLESALE PIUCES CUPRENT.
