CHARLESTON NEWS.

A meeting of the Hospital Committee was held on Tuesday evening, December 31, to pass accounts up to the end of the year. Amongst other business, a new rule was proposed and resolved, as regards the admission of pafcieifts, which was that applicants for admission without payment, must make a declaration of their circumstances before a magistrate, and hand over such declaration to the member of committee to whom the application is made. The accounts for the month of December, amounted to £B7 13s 9d, were examined and passed, and it was decided to call a public meeting for Friday evening next at half-past eight o'clock, for the purpose of receiving the report of the committee for the quarter just ended, and to fill up the vacancies in the committee. Mr Bain reported the result of the last concert to be as under : —Reeeipcs at door, £3B 16s 6d ; tickets sold, £5 8s ; total, £l3 3s 6d; expenses of all kinds, £3 9s; net receipts, £-10 14s Bd. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Bain for his services in getting up the concert, and to those gentlemen who were good enough to assist in the performance. A tremendous thunder-storm passed over Charleston on Monday night, accompanied by a perfect deluge of rain, which swept down the main street like a cataract, and must have filled the dam to overflowing in a very short time. In consequence of the continuance of a rather heavy surf on on the bai% there has been no change in our shipping report for the past few days. A miner having brought in a report that two children were starving in a solitary hut on the road to Waite's. The magistrate at once instructed a trooper to proceed to the spot and to inquire into the circumstances; the result will be known to-morrow.
