We frequently hoar the expression, "Dutch Courage," used in a slighting manner, tho insinuation being that before a Dutchman can fight, he must *' screw his courage to tho stiekiug point," by the aid of something stronger than water, As a matter of fact, tho Dutch are rather unkindly judged in this connection, for history lias shown they are a brave and sterling race of peoplo. One does not, howover, hear " Dutch Cocoa" spoken of in a contemptuous manner, for everyone knows it is tho best in tho world, and that Blooker's Dutch Cocoa, in particular, is rapidly obtaining pride of place above all other brands. The adjourned inquest 011 the body of James Dalgity was concluded on Wednesday. The evidence of deceased's brother-in-law, Ardent Wilton, went to show that deceased stayed at his house, Tc Ore Ore, on the previous night, and went away between five and sir o'clock next morning on horseback, intending to roach Mr Strang's station atß a.m. lie had no overcoat on, nor as far as witness knew any money on him. A verdict was returned that deceased was accidentally drowned in the Taueru ltiver 011 the morning of December 9th, The Persian navy is about to pay a visit to Bombay, with what intent cannot bo surmised, although in all probability the principal object is to giyo the officers of the shin an outing, and (sarcastically remarks the Pull Mall Gu:dte) to see if the Shah's navy can contrive to get from one port to another in tho open sea without coining to grief. Tho naval force of Persia consists of one ship, called the Perscpolis. She was for many years a tramp in the East, and has had more trouble from accidents of one sort and another than any ship, afloat in that part of the world. She has now, however, been turned into what the Persians seem to think a formidable lighting ship, having had n ram tacked on to her bow. The ram, according to a report from Bushire, has a knack of slipping its point downwards occasionally, but this is quickly remedied by fixing a chain round tho point and doing some hoisting work from the bowsprit. Tho I'ersepolis, when under forced draught, can do eight knots, and the Persians are naturally under all circumstances, very proud of her.
In cornection with tho breaking-up at the Slasterton Public School yesterday, an interesting little eyent took place. A rehearsal of tes Obclics do Come* villc was hold in the Theatre lioyal last evening, Madame Cope the new Germainc being present for the first time. We can unhesitatingly state that Madam c Cope lias a thorough grasp of the opera both musically and dramatically. Her faiHy powerful voice comes on to the auditorium, clear and crisp, Her attack and articulation are good and in the concerted numbers her voice balances well with the voices of Messrs W, Simros and M. Meadows. Her acting is good, wo may say almost faultless. Those ludicrous positions oftimes seen ou the stage are carefully avoided. Madame Cope's rendition of "Germaine" is comparatively an extended one, and will cast a newness over the wholo performance.
_ The use of tobacco has been stigmatised by a good many captious critics as an unclean and unhealthy habit. Notwithstanding these strictures, however, it iswouderfulwhatahostofvotaricsthefra. grant weed has. When New Venus and Queen Aromatic tobaccos are used, the objection of those who have laid such a strong indictment against smoking must fall to the ground, for these tobaccos are prepared from tho finest leaf, and absolute purity in manufacture is tho first consideration. If all tobaccos were as pure and fragrant as New Venus and Queen Aromatic, no ono could say the habit was either unclean or unhealthy.
