THE AUSTRALIAN SUMMER.
THE SUICIDE SEASON.
Sidney, December 14.
The hot snap last week was the of a spell of typical Australian summer weather-intense heat, since alternated with frequent heavy thunder showers, and though during this week the thermometer has been content with shade registers amongst the eighties, the humidity ••of the atmosphere has rendered tho heat distressingly oppressive. That there is a connection between the oppressive heat and the selfdestruction mania seems to be borne out by the record of the last few days. The week has been remarkable for a suicidal wave, no less than seven cases having been reported in the city and suburbs, while an eighth failed to effect his purpose, a solution of matoh heads, which he drank, pot buying (irqe to prove fatal before lie was found. All the eight were men.
