!h' W. Lowes has Tin: rendered eminent town I,amis services to tlio Town Tiil'ST, Lands Trust. For some months past he lias been precluded by ill-health from attending certain meetings. Under such circumstances it was tltc duty of the Tiust to protect bis sent. This obvious duty was neglected, and whether it was bungled by ■want of thought or because certain members of the Trust desired to squander money we cannot say. It is simply disgraceful that a man who lias more than once retrieved the fortunes of the Trust should be treated in such a scurvy fashion. Wo blame the Trust, and wo regret to say that wo rannot altogether exonerate the Secretary from our censure. It was bis duty, too, to see that Mr Lowes was protected, but apparently he did not do what Mr Lowes might fairly have expected at his hands. Tho wholothing has mado a most painful impression upon ourmind. We have often ourselves criticised Mr Lowes' administration, but wo havo always admitted the immense services lie lias discharged in hisoflicial position. His forced retirement at a timo when ill-health gave liiin a special claim for consideration, proves that there is not only no sonse of gratitude, but little even of deconcy in the conduct of public affairs in this town.
