MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING. * The regular fortnightly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held last evening. Present - His Worship the Mayor and Crs Hornblow, Hessey, Yates, Wagg, Feist, Simms, Chaniberlain, and \V. Perry. MINUTES. The minutes of the last meeting wero read and confirmed. WAIPOU'A lililDliE. A letter was received from the Lauds and Survey Department with reference to the Waipona Bridge maintenance enquiry, to he held at 10 o'clock on Monday, November ' . 25th. Tho Mayor and Crs Hessey and Chamberlain with the Town Clerk, were appointed to attend the enquiry to watch the Borough's interests. tI'EKHY-STKEET. F. Board wrote staling that he lias never been approached by the' j Borough Council, or any offer made | to him for the land proposed to be taken from him for widening Perrystreet. Correspondence regarding the same matter was received from the Lands and Survey Department, covering copies of objections lodged by Messrs Wilsone and Dr Beard. R. Wilsone wrote stating that he did not quite agree with his brother's action in writing to the Lands Department, as if reasonable compensation wero offered an arrangement, lie thought, might be effected. , A telegram was received at a later stage, asking that the letter be held over. ■ The letter was accordingly not - dealt with. Cr Hessey said he was always under the impression that Dr. Beard i had been approached on the Council's,' 11 -j. Mayor said he did not think i - he had been interviewed officially.! It was well known, however, all j1 along, that Dr. Beard was against! 1 giving his land. j < Cr Hessey thought the letters | < went rather far. It was well known I the Council had for years contem- • plated widening the road. < Cr Feist said he regretted that < I)r. Beard had not been officially 11 approached, but as the matter had' i gone so far, he thought it might be j' fairly left to the Mayor and Town I Clerk to attend (he enquiry and < employ counsel and any other assist- f auce necessary, He would movo in • this direction. 1 The motion was carried. 1
AUDIT FKK. An account of i' 4 for auditing tlio Borough accounts, was passed for payment. LEAVK OK ABSEXCK. On tlio motion of Cr. Hornblow,lcave of absence was granted to Cr, Mntrie,on account of ill-liealtb. UNITED DISTRICT IiOAItD. JTlic Mayor said an election of a of the United District Hospital Board, would take place on November 27 Hi. The Mayor was empowered to act for the Council, the question of who should be supported, being loft open. NEW lIHIIjOING. Robert lligg applied for permission to erect a cottage in Chapelstreet. The matter was referred to the Borough Surveyor. WOItKS AND FINANCE REPORT. The Works and Finance Committee's report was read and adopted. Flllt BRIGADE. An application for a grant of £5, for incidental expenses, made by the Ktiripiini Fire Brigade, wis entertained. KXM.OSIVES. W. Betty reported to the Council with regard to the kerosene anil explosives kept by the various vondors in Masterton, The Mayor thought it might be as well to refer the report back to Mr Betty, for bis opinion as to the instability of the premises used for ""afcing dangerous goods, by the applicants for licenses, awl to dofer granting licenses in the meantime. A rough sketch of a magazine, to cost about £BO, was submitted to tbo Council by Mr C. E. Darnell. Cr Perry thought this would be a step in the right direction, The Mayor thought it would be as well to let the matter stand over until Mr Betty's report was before the Council. QI'EEX-STIIEET Cr Simms said he had made enquiries and found that tlio majority of the property owners in Queenstreet, from the Prince of Wales Hotel to Worksop Road, bad signified their willingness to contribute their proportion to asphalting tbo footpath in front of their properties, It was decided that the Town Olerk write to all interested and that the work bo proceeded with.
