The report of the Select Com--3 mittee, which was appointed to „ enquire into the Village Settlements 1 Scheme, shows that the expenditure 1 contemplated under the Act, viz., £15,000 has been exceeded by s £26,000. e The average cash advanco to • settlers was £59 per head, and the 3 average total indebtedness is £BS '• per head, J Only one village was started where tho residents possessed any considerable meanß. ' The number of acres now under " cultivation is 3,276, of which 2,400
is planted in cereals. e Tho Inspector advised that the . cereal industry should not bo relied on, and only two settlements might d possibly manage without Govern--11 mcnt assistance, while it would be f impossible for somo to succeed—oven ■ with further assistance—under the • present conditions.
