WELLINGTON I EXCELSIORS. i The annual cricket match betweon i tho Excelsior Clubs of Wellington . and Masterton was played on the • Oval on Saturday, and created coni siderablc interest, a largo number of . peoplo attending, and watching the progress of the game with considerable interest. The Wellington men ' arrived by the morning train, and after having dinedatllostWickens', proceeded at onco to the ground, where a new pitch had been prepared directly opposite the Grand Stand. The local team wore first sent in, to the trundling of Gonaglo and Rutherford, and the first two: men were sent away to the pavilion I before a run was scored. Shaw (a new player in theso parts, with nn excellent reputation from Christchurch) got hold of the bowling, and treated the spectators to a pretty display of neat batting. Thisplayer, with tho help of Wickens and Ross, made affairs very merry, and ran the scoring up to 32 between them. Illingsworth(tlieWollingtonskippor) then took charge of the bowling, and the wickets fell fast, tho hist men retiring with the total nt 39. Wellington at once took up their position at the wickets, but the excellent bowling of Ross and Bennett proved very disastrous, and several of the crack bats retired for few runs. Rutherford was the only player to make a stand, making 23 runs, showing excellent form with the bat. Thetotiil of 50 was readied before the last wicket fell, therefore leaving Wellington victorious by eleven runs on the first innings. The Jlastorton men again went in, and succeeded in knocking up 33 for six wickets when time was called, Shaw faithfully upholding his reputation by making 14, when be was put out by a splendid catch in long field. The fielding of both teams was excellent, that of the local men coming as a surprise to many who
witnessed the mutch. The visitors left for Wellington by the live o'clock train, well pleased with their outing and victory.
