Tin: now excursion fares advertised by the Railway Department, seem designed to particularly encourage second-class (.welling, and wisely so. On previous holidays, the firstclass passenger paid most money and got. the worst accommodation, inasmuch as owing to there being insufficient difference between first and second-class fares, nearly every, one availed himself of the higher grade, and consequently where there should have been most comfort, there was generally a maximum of crush. The new second-class fares arc, however, materially lower than tho first-class, so much so, as to tempt many | who have hitherto travelled "first,"to in future deliberately prefer "second," and save the considerable difference in expense. For instance, last Easter it cost a man 9s 6d for a first-class return ticket between Mastcrton and Wellington, and 7s for second-class, both of these boing available for the day onlyMay excursions" they were called. If he wanted to stop longer than the day, the passenger had to pay 18s and 15s respectively, But all this is now altered, and on the Prince of Wales' Birthday, now at hand, the system of excursion fares has been.simplified, and the same ticket (lis 10d first-class, and ss' U(l. second-class) is available either for return on the same day, or for nso at any time within the ; succeeding ton days, Thus it will WLScen-that whereas the first-class day excursionist has to pay about '2f morej the second-class traveller gets his journey for a shilling loss; and in tho case of the extended period, availablo for over a week, both classes benefit,
