ATTEMPTED MURDER, AND SUICIDE.

licmml Nomnbcr 6,9.50 p.m. Sydney, November 6. A sad affair occurred at North Sydney this morning. The family of William Smith, an 'lmperial pensioner, were aroused by the screams of the mother, and on proceeding to her bedroom found that the father had cut the throats of his wife and himself. Tho unfortunate woman had received an ugly wound, which probably will not prove fatal; but Smith's windpipe was severed, and he is in a dangerous condition, Smith was until recently Warrant Officer of tho local forces, but was retrenched; and want of work and financial embarrassment induced melancholia. He had written a letter in which ho said he was tired of the struggle, and intimated his intention of killing himself and his wife and family of six children.
