Bishop Ncvill, in tlio course of his id. dress to the Anglican Synod at X)uncdin, made reference to prophetic revelations, and said that if tlio great dragon who persecuted tlio woman anddrovolierinto the wilderness was the Mahoromedan power, then perhaps they might hope the time of deliverance was at hand, for tlio dragon's power was to be for 1260 years, and the Mahommedans had taken Jerusalem in C3G. Tho Bishop made reference to the Pope's address to tlio English nation, which, he mid, might he termed a wasted oft'ort; but the movement to unito the various divisions of Weslcyanisin should have their good wishes. It was possible the Wesleyaus would come tosee that every argument they advanced with so much force as to the evils of division was fully applicable to their own secession. The Bishop said the iron had entered his soul when he found that the diocese at large would not, as he had imagined, rise as one man and throw oil the debt of tho cathedral. Tho depression had, no doubt, much to do with this, but the discovery had been forced upon him that tho cause lay much deeper,-a want of living enthusiasm Mr I. J. Fake, formerly of Wellington, but now of Palmerston North, has brought under the notice of the Admiralty an invention which he expects to revolutionise naval warfare. He sends a Wellington paper the following particulars ; I noticed in a London paper some months ago that tho French had invented a submarine torpedo-boat to sink at will, and torpedo and sink vessels as they pass under them. I immediately made up my mind to checkmate this if possible, and I may state that after several months of hard study I have succeeded in forming a schome which irill allow our ironclads and cruisers to go into* action, and it will bo a matter ( of impossibility for a torpedo or any number of torpedoes to sink them, and tho present plan with booms and torpedo nets can be dispensed with. My scheme will also allow of a much greater speed without any increase of steam power j also our ironclads may bo built with lighter armour,, and bo perfectly safo from destruction by torpedoes. This scheme I have forwarded to the Admiralty as being of tho greatest importance to our nation at tho present moment, I ! notico that a man in Ballarat has in- j vented a torpedo which can be launched i through tho air as a projectile. My : scheme will resist this class of torpedo ] as well, 11

The new physiologists who try to measure the movorucnts ot brain cells and invent machines to calculate the (low of nervous energy tell us that man is an unnatural creature. Ifc was not meant for any such work as lio puts himself to, It was not intended that he 1 should use his brain under pressure ten hours a day, and tax his digestion with vast quantities of food at intervals which keep the digestive process in constant and active operation, Considering the irrational way in which people live and work, the human race makes, they admit, a brave light for existence, and the fact that man manages to live so long as he docs, and leaves an ever-increasing progeny is a tribute to his prowess, Physicians have made great progress in the treatment of disease within a half century, and there is cycry reason to hope that they will make many conquests in the next half-century. Under their care human life ought to be much prolonged, i£ it were not for the fact that the discoveries of science hardly keep pace with tho new agencies of destruction which Mine with the highly developed conditions of society. Tho problem of lengthening the span of lifo is one of balance, the ratio of increase in death-dealing agencies and in preventive and curative knowledge. Pioneer days wore hard on life. We think of the fathers as old men when, iu fact, they were mostly young, Notonlywasmedical science in a primitive state, but conditions of life, exposure, ill-heated homes, badly-cooked food, excessive physical labour, the wear and tear of a civilised man's fight against nature for. existence iu surroundings hotter fitted for a savage—all made a more than average constitution a condition for even a modcrato span of life. Those evils have gone, but with than has gone the simplicity which robbed them of half their bad offcct. Tho modern man lives more comfortably, but he subjects himself to more external dangers. When ' he learns to mako use of all that science 1 teaches while at tho same time ho guards ] himself against the accidents of civili- - sation, and, above all, keeps himself < from being carried away by its unrest and its luxury, lie may fiope for a longer ] lease of life. It was not tho hardships , of the old time, but jts simplicity which | made vigorous men. It will not be the i comforts of the future, bnt its tcmpta- _ tions to unhcalthfut and unnatural liv- i ing, that willmostthreaten longevity.— 1 New York Tribune. i
