MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MEETING. ' Tho regular monthly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held last evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor and Crs Hornblow, Yates, Mutrie, Wagg, Simms, Feist, Chamberlain and W. Perry. JllJilTO. Tho minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. KXPMISIVES. Messrs J. Graham it Co., P. A. Rive, C. E, Dauiell, and the W.F.C, A,, made application for licenses to store ■ kerosene and gunpowder on their premises. The Inspector of Nuisances re-, ported generally on tho explosives kept on tho premises of the various vendors in Masterton, and also that nono were licensed. The Mayor said tho report showed that there was only a modest quantity kept by each dealer. It would be necessary to refer tho applications to the Inspector, who would see the

.provisions of the By-law were carried Amt. It was decided to adjourn the applications for licenses for the Borough Surveyor's Report, In reply to Cr Feist the Mayor said the license fee was 10s. In the meantime other storekeepers could apply to the Clerk. Referring to tho storage of gunpowder the Mayor said it was a serious matter. It would be well for the Works Committee to consider the question of a public magazine. A magazine had been built by Mr Caselberg on Council property which might bo available. Finally it was decided that the. Works Committee report on the matter at next meeting.

HOSI'IUIi HOARD, Tlio Clerk to the Wairarapa District Hospital Board wrote informing the Council that it is entitled to elect one member of that Board 011 November 27th. His Worship the Mayor was appointed again. I'EHHY STREET. A communication was received Jjra'om the Lands Department approving the plans for the widening of Perry-street. Cr Hornblow said that ho had been given to understand that neither Dr. Beard nor Mrs Wilsone had been directly approached 011 the question of widening Perry-street, The Mayor said both had been approached, Tbo Clerk said the matter had beon in the hands of a Committee for years, He was sure both Dr, Beard and Mrs Wilsone had been spoken to about the matteron several occasions. Dr Beard had always spoken against any of his land being taken, as it would bring the road too close to bis bouse. Cr Hornblow said it was merely a matter of whether it would bo loss expensive to ask the persons interested, what sum they would accept, before taking the land under the Public Works Act, Cr Feist thought that it was rather late in the day to raise this question. He had supported paying Mr Woodroofe the sum asked, as he did not think they would get his jjfajand, under any circumstances, for a Tfes sum. The matter thou dropped. fiAfi IiEI'ORT. ' The Gas and Library Committee's report was read and adopted. VILLA STREET. • In reply to Cr Hornblow the Mayor said that with regard to Villa-street lie thought tlioy had better go «n with the culvert in its present position. Cr Hessey did not agree with " this but suggested a deviation. Cr Hornblow said that Cr Hessey was unavoidably absent and had •" i asked him to represent his viows, Cr Hessoy was strongly in favor of the deviation as a more permanent job. The Mayor said the Works Committee had tho matter in hand, and would give tho suggestion consideration, No other busiuesscomiug forward, tho Council then adjourned, on the motion of Cr Yates.
