It is curious to think of the part which consumption has played in novels and dramas, and then to reflect that it is after all an enemy almost as hideous as small-pox, It is only within most recent years that the marriage of a consumptive bas ccascd to hold its place as a romantic incident in literature. The hero, returning after a long absence and finding the heroine in consumption, would marry her with the full sympathy of the reader. But now that the lieriditary and contagious nature of the disease is fully recognised, we justly shudder at such a union, It is probable that regulations such as those which apply to fevers and cholera, will before long apply to consumption also. And it is meanwhile the duty of friends and relatives of the consumptive to use nil the means at their disposal for the protection of the healthy.
