Wairarapa Daily Times. [Established 1874.] SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1895. TOWN WATER SUPPLIES.
We take au interest iu all questions relative to tho supply of pure high pressure water to small towns. A friend at Napier has kindly placed at our disposal some particulars of tho water works in that locality. Of course Napier is nearly three times as populous as Mastertou, and its enterprise is therefore on a corresponding scale. The supply there is an artesian one, dorived from three fi inch and soyen 3 inch pipes which have been sunk to depth's varying from 150 to 200 feet at a cost of £1,449. Each of the larger pipes gives 16,000 gallons per hour, and each of tho smaller ones 4,500 gallons. Tho other special features in connection with the works are, a receiving tank of a capacity of 251,000 gallons erected on tho sea level at a cost of £1,500, a low pressure reservoir 147 feot above the sea level, with a capacity of 270,000 gallons erected at a cost of £3,026, and a high pressure reservoir of a capacity of 352,000 gallons which cost£4, Boo; this is3os feet above tho sea level. The latter gives a pressure of from 130 to 150 lbs to the square inch. The work of raising tho water into the reservoirs is performed bynlargeengineand boiler which cost £2400, and a small ono. Tho annual consumption of fuel is, coal 100 tons, coke 200 tons. These water works were started in the year 1876, and since that date tho revenue received from the supply Ims amounted to £24,765. Tho total cost of plant, buildings, extensions, working, etc., has been £61,422. The water is said to be supplied to residents at a much lower price than to the inhabitants of any other town in the Colony. These particulars will probably .prove interesting to many of our readers who, as engineers professional and amateur, and as members of Firo Brigades, take a special interest in water supply questions. It is a matter of regret that somo of our local engineers do not indicate to tho public, the cheapest and best method of obtaining a high pressure watersupply for this town.
