PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

CHOIR SOCIAL. A social of more than ordinary interest, was held in the Masterton Presbyterian Church, last ovening, when a largo and appreciative gathering was present. The Kev, Robert Wood, in a fow wollchosen remarks, extended ut welcome ! to tho people and announced the various items to be given by the performers. ! Tho programme for the evening, 1 was opened by Mr W. Simms rendering " Time and Tide," which elicited great applause. Then followed an item by Miss E Johnston, who sang to a Masterton audience for the first time, in "Tho Song For Me," in which this young lady's fine contralto voice was heard to perfection, receiving a hearty encore from her hearers. Mr J. Mowlem then treated the audience toan exceptionally wellrendered violin solo, in which he was accompanied on the piano by Mr Meadows. Lovers of Scottish songs and music were then enraptured with Miss M, Johnston's rendering of " Caller Ou," and that lady, whose powers as a vocalist are woll-knovvn, had to respond to an imperative encore, her song proving tho gem of the evening. A vocal duet, entitled "Nocturne," was given by Messrs W. Simms and M, Meadows, in a faultless and decidedly tasteful manner. Another new voice to the audience was that of Mis 11. Millar, who sang " Remember Mo No More " in a very pleasing manner, tho item being greeted with much merited applause. Mr R, 6, Langtou then sang " Queen of tho Earth " in his usual fine style, aud was woll received. At this interval in tho programme an ample supply of good things in tho way of refreshments was handed round by the ladies of tho Choir, who had so kindly provided them, after which in continuation of the programme, a novel item was introduced by Miss E. Johnston, who treated those present toasweetly rendered concertina solo, in which she was accompanied by her sister Miss M. Johnston, on tho piano. Tho audience did not cease to applaud until Miss Johnston responded to the encore. Mr M. Meadows then sang, " At My Window," with great effect. Yet another new voice to tho audience was that of Miss Munro, who received rpiite an ovation for her rendering of" Pierutt," the gathering not remaining content until that lady had given " The Carnival," as an encoro number. Tho last item on the programmo, was a vocal duet from Mies E. Johnston and Mr W. Simms, entitled " Life's Dream Is O'or, Farewell," and proved a capital ending to undoubtedly one of the most enjoyablo ovenings spont in the Church for somo time past, Much praise is due to tho accom--1 panists, IBbs D. Bunting anil Jlr M. Meadows, who contributed greatly to the success of the Social, by their i playing. Tho audience dispersed after tho ! singiug of the " National Anthem," and a few complimentary remarks from the Rev. Mr Wood, regarding those who bad provided both tho refreshments and tho musical items, and especially to tlio.se who had taken part in the social for tho first time \ Mr Wood also announced that the liberal collection taken up during the evening, would materially reduce 1 tho amount of the liability on tho Organ Fund.
