ORDINARY MEETING.
Tho regular fortnightly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held last evening. Present— His Worship the Mayoi, and Crs Hornblow, Hessey, Yntes, Mutrio, Wagg, Sinnns, Feist ami W. Pony. MIXI'IES. Tho minutes of last meeting were , read and confirmed. HUE I'KEVESTIOS, E. Pragnell, wrote on behalf of tho Municipal Fire Brigado pointing out the urgent-need of a Brswcll at tho end of Chapel Streot. •' The matter was referred to tho Firo Brigado Committee. driver's license. F. Spackmau, of Cricket-street, mado application for a drive's license. M. The matter was left in the hiRsT of the Inspector of Hacknoy Car-' n'ages. WAIiES. The Railway Department nrot'e* asking information with regard to the wages paid to surface-mon, etc, in the district. > The Clerk said ho had supplied th» information, BURGESS LIST. Geo. K, Bond mado application to bavo tho name of G. Taylor inserted on tho Burgess List. A. L. Thompson mado application to have his name placed on tho roll, C. E, Darnell applied to have Mr W. B. Ohonnells' namo substituted, for his own on tho Outer Ward List, Tho applications were granted. VILLA-STKEK'I. A petition signed by soveral residents in Villa-street was recoivod asking that a culvert bo put in aft the end of tho street. Cr Hessey said that ho had visited » tho locality. Ho thought that to' mako a good job of tho culverts required would cost about £2O?Sp would bo necessary to see Mr RemM before doing the work to see if hi» permission could bo obtainod to divert the stream. Tho Mayor said he hardly understood why the culvert was so badly,. wanted. "" ' Mr Blinkhorne, who was in attendance, explained that tho bridge at present was unsafe for carts and cattlo to cross. If the two channeli were, turned into one, the force of water would be too groat in flood time, A twelve foot culvert would do very well, ho thought. The Mayor said if the matter was an absolute necessity he hadnodoubt the Council would do tho work. He would remind the petilioaors, liowevoiy that tho Counoil had to h careful in its expenditure, Cr Hornblow thought tho matter' should receive attention without, further delay, He would move that, tho Council voto £l2 towards tk* work, ,
Cr Yates seconded the motion. Cr Hessoy moved as an amende ; ment, that the matter be held oveir a further report. He didjjjfrfc believe in half-doing the thing IW was done at all. The sum of £l2: would not be sufficient,
Cr Feist said that-he thought it would be better to refer the matter to the Works Committee withpowev' to act. As Cr Hessoy bad said h> did not believe in half measures, and y £l2 might not be enough. In answer to Cr Simins, Cr Hossey explained that Jfrßenall owned the neck of land between the two streams and it was thought if Mrßenall were agreeable a shorter culvert might be more advantageously put in higher up than the present bridge. It was finally decided to leave the ; matter in the hands of the Works' Committee with power fo pet. The deputation present in support ■ oi the petition then withdrew. NEW BUILDING. Plans of a new building proposed to be erected in Perry-street by Messrs Penty and Forde, were roceived. •, J^ GLADSTONE ROAD. <9 An account in connection with theGladstone (boundary) Road/., was referred to the Finance Committee.. REPORT, The Works and Finance Committee's report was read and adopted, PRIME OF WALES' BIRTHDAY..
