A serious firo broko out in J1 listings, shortly before 8 o'clock last * night, resulting in tho destruction of a pood portion of the business part of the town. Tho lire slarlcd in a small shop occupied by 1\ Home, bootmaker, forming a portion of Bethel's (saddler) premises. Tho flames had a strong hold beforo tho Brigade got properly to work, and in the course of two hours, five of the most centrally--1 situated business premises wore burned to the ground. From Home's and lieihel's, the firo spread to Blytlio A Co.'s drapery establishment, S. Ridgeway's (clothier) shop, Ecclca' (chemist), and Lys 1 (tailor), all of ivliio'i were quickly destroyed. Tho Brigade checked the tlames at Forman's # butchery, next to Gorman's Carlton Hotel, the corrugated iron facings of the partition between Lys' shop, helping to prevent the spread of the tire.
