Praa AMoclation-Elcctrio Tolegraph—Copj-rißht LORD BRASSEY. IMPERIAL DEFENCE. Received- October 17,10.30 a.m. Aluany, October 17. Lord Brassey, who was entertained at a banquet, in reforring to Imperial Defence, said it was quite clear to his mind that the Bhiire of Australia in defence would be of a local character. In joining the Imperial Federation League it was never his view that he should endeavour to get the colonies to give greater pecuniar)- assistance for defence, and he believed that the public feeling in the Old Country was that whatever might be tho future development, at the present time it would be unwise and was uncalled for, to make any attempt to increase contributions. He had come to the conclusion that tbe Imperial Federation League should cease to exist as there was now no need of anybody to stir up sympathy for the colonies.

His Eicollency then referred to his estate near here, and said that General Booth desired to use it as an oversea Colony, but after consideration he had decided not to accede to his request as it was not agood thing for a young country to have some hundreds of people-not of the best class as colonists-dumped down within it.
