" There is now a prospect that the supply of gutta-percha will become permament, Tlio old nativo method of cutting down a tree to get the gum, and thus killing the goose that laid the golden eggs, is giving place to that of plucking • ■ „ the leaves and extracting the gum from , them. This plan has been put in prac- ; tiiebyM. Houranf at Sarawak with i success. Tho gum from the leaves js I 0 not only purer, but there is mors of it. n An adult tree of 23 to 30 years'growth o only yields one cutty of gum when the :c tree is sacrificed, whereas two pluckings n of tho leaf yield as much without injuring the tree. Moreover, tho saplings from the roots of trees already cut down are useful in yielding leaves , A snuff-box, said to he made out o, one of the old triple gallows at Tyburnf lias been sold by auction near Nottingham. When executions were abolished . " at Tyburn, in 1783, and the front of r s Newgate Prison selected instead, tho I t woodwork of the gallows was purchased , [1 by a neighbouring innkeeper, Ulli* 1 [i mateiytho timber was used for the manufacture of souvenirs, and a ' descendant of this iionifnee, who died r«cently, owned the smifl'-box. A clever surgical operation was re--0 cently performed by a medical prnctii- tjoner at Loughborough, in England, j 1 Some sixteen months ago, a girl, between 15 and 10 years of age, swallowed what I was thought at that time to be a lish- • hone. The usual means to prevent choking were taken, and with success, liecently, however, the girl, who is the f daughter of labouring parents, became . troubled with an abscess near the neck. I' Probing became necessary, and a foreign body being felt, the patient was put 1 under chloroform, when the doctor 'i extraclcdanorilinnrysafely-pin (closed). [ . Ihis pin had remained in the gullet of the girl for Hi months. ) A broach of promise ease, in which i the damages were hid at .t'uUOO, came to a very satisfactory end at Bristol recently. The plaintiff was a Miss Annie Lennard, and she sued a young man named George Kendall, of liitton, near Gloucester, for trilling with her f j affections. Judgment had been allowed - to go by default, mid the only question " for the jury was to assess the amount of t the damages, They were, however, even relieved of this duty, for when the case \ s was called, the solicitor for the plaintiff ' | announced that there would after all be t no occasion to trouble the jury. The s young man had seen the error of his Is way, the young lady had taken him ■ back to her heart, and that they were S 1 away on their iionu'inoon, having been married on the day before. It lias been proved that direct sunshine tends to kill microbes, and De lienzi lias shown by experiments on al guinea pigs that exposure to sunshine ai tended to prolong their lives after they " had been inoculated with tuberculous ' disease, a fact which explains the cl • favourable iiilluence of Davos ami other . sunny resorts on consumptive patients, i According to similar experiments with - . the cholera and typhoid liacilli recently carried out by Dr. llasellu, exposure to ' sunshine has a contrary effect in these cases. Infected guinea nigs which had 1 ! been accustomed to sunshine died more J ; quickly than those kept iu diffused y ■ light, and, moreover, succumbed to . smaller doses of the infection, If, G • therefore, as Dr. Franklaml points out, - our gloomy climate is unfavourable iu . lung disease, it seems favourable in I cholera ami typhus.
