Pai'wobiii. rxiHIH Company has been formed for the purpose of acquiring the sole patent rights for New Zealand of the "Collier Two-speed Gear" for Cycles, and to import or manufacture Cycles Sited with the gear. It is generally admitted by riders of the ordinary machine that its greatest defect, as a means of locomotion, is the diflioulty of mounting hills and riding against the wind, or on bad roads. This is caused by the siugle gearing, The object of a two speed gear is to lessen the amount of lnbour necessary to propel the cycle up bills ami against bead winds, or on bad roads, and at the same time to allow a higher speed than usual to bo attained on level roads. Hill-climbing robs cycling of much of its pleasure, ami it is to remove this barrier that the " Collier TwoSpeed Gear" has been designed, It is simple iu construction, strong, and is built as part uf the machine. In use, all that is necessary is to raise a knob, fitted at the top of the cycling frame, and the gearing is changed while riding at any speed. Thus, if a hill is to be climbed, the knob is lowered, and immediately tbo machine becomes much easier to propel. On reaching the summit, by raising the knob the higher gear comes into play, ami increased speed is obtained. The hard work hitherto necessary to propel a high-geared machine on give and take roads has debarred many people from indulging in the pleasure of cycling, and it is confidently anticipated that the "Two-Speed Gear" will add greatly to the popularity of the sport. The "Collier Two-Speed Gear" is absolutely new as a simple mechanical motion, and iu this lies one great security to investors, It has been put to every practical test, and the highest testimonials have been received from the leading English and Colonial riders and engineers. I Orders for the "Collier Two-Speed" have already been received from the leading cycle-makers in Cbristchurch, Auckland, Dunedin, Napier, ic, and it has created the greatest interest amoug.it cyclists throughout the Colony, The immense strides cycling is making throughout the world, not only as a sport, but as a means uf locomotion in the business affairs of life, must be apparent to every observer. In New Zealand it ut in its infancy, aud the favourable climate (making it practical to cycle almost [he whole year round) points to its being much more universally used than iu less favoured countries. It is estimated by experts that there were 2500 bicycles sold last year in New Zealand, and in a very few years it would not bo surprising to see these figures raised to 5000. Considering the immense advantages of the I "Collier Two-Speed Gear" over the single I speed cycle, it is calculated that at least GOO machines would be sold the first full season, and it is confidently expected that two-thirds of the cycles purchased throughout the Colony, will be fitted with this gear. A first-class cycle, fitted with the Collier Two-Speed Gear, sells for iil 10s, and tnis at a net profit of £3 8s per cycle, provides for a dividend of 25 per cent., and leaves a surplus of £BOO. This estimate does not include any profit by way of interest on deferred payment business, or for sales oi tbo gear to other makers, which, in itself, should represent a substantial profit, and the Directors have every reason to believe that this estimate will be :onsiderably exceeded. They see iu this simple invention as great a revolution in cycling, as was caused by the advent of the now universally adopted Pneumatic Tyre, the company owning which paid, in 1803, a dividend of 200 per cent., aud placed £IOO,OOO to the reserve fund. It is intended to establish the head office of the Company in Wellington, as being the most central point to work the Colony from. No delay will take place in the Company doing business, as the gears are being made in large quantities in Kncland. The 1 Collier Two-Speed Gear" Company, Manchester, aro prepared to supply them immediately. The purchase price fixed by tbo Vendor ie £550 cash, £SOO in 12 months, 1000 fully paid-up shares, aud a royalty of 10s per gear; but tbo vendor is willing to forego reoeipt of any royalty on the first OOOgears, The Vendor has made provision lor the payment of all expenses of forming and floating the Company up to the first allotment of shares. Where no allotment is made the application money will be returned in full, and where the number of shares allotted is less than the number applied for, the surplus will be appropriated on account of thi allotment money.
