LANTERN ENTERTAINMENT.

An instructive and most interesting lime-light lantern lecture on "Japan, its cities, customs and people," was given last evening in the Masterton Presbyterian Church, by the Rev, Robert Wood, to a somewhat large and appreciative audience. The lecture was illustrated by a large and well-selected assortment of photo-slides, depicting Japanese life, scenery, temples, cities, industries, customs, people, and various oilier scenes in keeping with this truly interesting country and its progressive inhabitants, the pictures being finely displayed by the aid of the newly-imported oxyo-ether lantern, which is indeed of a very up-to-date pattern, and was well handled by Messrs H. Jack and J. McGregor jtinr., who have spent some time in studying the working of it. Mr Wood delivered his lecturo in line style, having tlio subject at his linger ends and keepinir his audienceinterested. During the evening Miss L). Bunting presided at the piano, and amongst other items played the ''Japanese National Anthem," in a decidedly tasteful manner, elicit ing great applause from theaudieuce, who passed a hearty vote of thanks to this young lady, as well as to the gentlemen ivho manipulated the lantern. It was announced that (lie proceeds from these entertainments will go toward the Lantern Bible Fund, whereby, in due course, a series of Biblical pictures, extending over (he Old and New Testaments, will be placed at the free disposal of the scholars attending tho Presbyterian Sunday School,
