CORRESPONDENCE.

THE BALLANCE FACTORY. [to the editor.] Silt, —I wish to point out to your ( vendors that jour leader of 17th is . not quite right. as regards the eon- j tract entered into between the milk suppliers and I lie N.Z.L, and Jl, Co, The contract was for five years; j advance on the milk was to be 3d per gallon of lOilbs of milk on a test B'G for live years. The form of contract was printed; clause 14 was blank at ' lime of signing iindshould have been i altered so as to read .')d per gallon 1 as per test above. The above i Company, without the have or eon- 1 sent of suppliers, have seen lit lo I' alter the terms of contract from 3d per gallon to 8 per cent, of butter ' fat value. It is not a question as to whether the proposal of the Company re an advance for the future is a fair one or not, based on the prices of last ] season; but, first, is the Company at liberty to break theircontract without reference to the suppliers'( The question has been well considered by the suppliers, and they on tlieir part (through myself) have made the | following proposal: that they were prepared to takelijd per lb. of butter fat, or about. 2Jd per gallon; (I may say that nearly all the factories are paying 2|d); the settlers did, it is true, make it a condition that the Company should do the following: , grant two years in which to pay olf half of the loss, the other half to lay J at interest for the present, Now, in , view of the fact that tho Company for their own convenience altered—and by this means destroyed—the contract, it is rather a one-sided act on their part, to make a haul and fast proposal of an advance of (id per lb, of butter fat and call on suppliers to pay oft' all the loss in one season; to accept their terms means that suppliers will not really receive Id per gallon; aid will not pay for the milking, never to speak of interest on loans, rents, or any of the other needfuls of life. Had the Company mentioned such terms ivhen they came to Ballance and made their proposals, the settlors would not have entered into any contract; as the matter now stands, there is no contract. Every supplier in Ballance will confirm the above facts. Notwithstanding the fact tliatscttlers arc free, they arc still anxious to see the Company out of its troubles. The settlers propose to form a Company of their own, and will rent the factory from the Company on terms that should satisfy it. The settlers need all the support they can get, and they are and will receive it fro# all fair thinking men. The settlers elected a Committee, not Directors; if there had been Directors things would never have reached the present pass. I remain, yours in reply, W. W, McCardmi.
