FRANCE AND THE NEW HEBRIDES
Sydney, September 22. i It is rumoured that the Consuls are sounding the Governments with n view to tho annexation of tho New Hebrides. Enquiries go to confirm the bolief that some important changes are contemplated. The Premier states that lie lias received no information on tho subject from tho Imperial authorities, He is convinced Trance will tako no steps without consulting England, and equally sure that England will do nothing to disturb tho stains quo, and nothing has occurred to disturb the Treaty between England and Prance. The missionaries recently returned from tho group, say that the opinion generally exists, that a movement is on foot to secure the Fronch control of tho Islands, and considorablo alarm exists among tho English residents and traders. Tho missionaries fear that tho annexation will put an end to Protestant Missions.
