The success which has attendee the Carterton Assembly dances diir ing the present season lias been si great, and they have grown so mncl in popularity, that the Comraittei decided the final one should be r Plain und Fancy Dress Ball to wind up the season. The same oventnat ing on Thursday ovoning, in thi Assembly Room, a large number ol poople being present, the majority of whom wore attired in fancy dross The Hall was most tastefully decorated with nikau palms ant evergreens, the floor being in splendid ordor. Capital music was sup plied by an excellent string band consisting of Mrs Kitchen (piano) Messrs Bish (clarionet), Billow; (violin), and Kitchen (cornet), r special word of praise being dne ti them for their untiring efforts Extras wero playod during tho even, ing by Misses Koydkouse (2) Stevens, and Billows. Mr W. Engli carried out the duties of M.C. in i pleasing manner. The following wero some of tb< characters represented " Misi Stevens, " Red Riding Hood"; Misi Edwards," Highland Lassio "; Misi Nelly Brown, "Folly"; Jlis, Stevens," Butterfly"; Miss Moore " Bohemian Girl"; Miss Batlibono "Japanese Lady"; Mrs W.Moore "Doctor of Music"; Mi6B Judd " Romp"; Mrs Bish, " Carnival" Mrs Billows," Old English My." Gentlomen—Messrs W. Moore " Hamlet"; Billows," Irish Gentle man"; Knell, "Garibaldi"; F Shenan, "Cricketer"; Smith, "Irisl Squire "; W. Booth, " Courier " H. Wood, "Spanish Count"; W Eagle," Sundowner." Besides tho abovo mentioned ther were a large number of ladies ani gentlemen in evening dress. Dan cing was kopt up till an early liou on Friday morning,atthe conclusio: of which all expressed themselve as having thoroughly enjoyed tli ball.
