MONTHLY MEETING-. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Wairarapa North County Council, was held yesterday, PresenfrCrs Von Reden (Chairman), R. Maunsell, Handyside, D. Guild, Cockburn-Hood, E, Smith and J, Groves, MINUTES, The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. ASSISTANT CLERK. Mr J. Wheeler was appointed Assistant Clerk to the Council. MAXGAMATAKA ROAD LOAN. The Chairman stated that the Committee appoiuted to consider the inclusion of certain sections of Messrs Macquarrie Bros.'properties, reported that as at a future time the sections indicated would be liable for n loan on Barton's Road, they recommend that no steps be taken with the loan in question, SLAUGHTERING MCEXSK. Mr A, M, Berry applied for a slaughtering license, but the Clerk reported that no copies of the advertisement had come to hand.— Resolved to grant the license provided that all tho conditions of the Act have been complied with, ixsrr.cioiis. Resolved to ask the Inspector of Police to allow the Constable at Mnkuri, to inspect the slaughterhouse at, Pmigaroa. On the motion of the Chairman, Constable Grey of Eketahuua, was appointed to all the appointments lately held by Constable Nestor. LEGAL OPINION, The solicitor to tho Council forwarded an opinion that the Council had no powerto take land for a roadiu.iii's cottage; also that the Council had power to take land for right-of- , ways and approaches to tho ford at TuNui. CrGroves was authorised to interview Mr O'Connor on the question of the right-of-way to the ford. IMPOUXDIXC Jas. Bragg wrote on the question ■ of stray cattle, and refund of fees 1 paid to tho Ranger,—Letter received. THE EKETAUUXA ROAD. The Chairman stated that with . the Engineer they met Mr McLean, ; of the Railway Department, and he agreed that the cause of the over- • flow, which damaged the road, was i due to the collection of water on the I line at Eketahuna, owing to the culvert being too small. | Resolved to forward tho report to the Minister, and unless a speedy lettlement Is made that steps be ; taken to onforco payment for tho i damage done. GRAVEL RESERVE, Mr G. H. Scales wrote re gravel reserve at Hawera, Mr Cavanagh offering to give a site where suitabU in exchange for tho Council's site.— Referred to the Engineer to report, FARM SETTLEMENTS. j Tho Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote stating that none of his staff could be allowed to make out tho lists of Farm Settlements, even in overtime. Resolved that tho Commissioner be requested to employ someone to do the work at tho cost of the Council. FBSCIJfG KOAD LINE. From Mr T. H. Groves on the matter of fencing road line at Mount Baker-road. Tho Clerk produced extracts from tho minute-book of the late Alfredton Road Board, and after consideration it was resolved that the County could not he held responsible for tho cost of fencing. JIT, BAKER-ROAD. Resolved that Mr Rawsou be authorised to take steps towards the legalisation of the Mt, Baker-road, -M-U'IiICEVILLE RANGER. Tho Council decided to empower the ranker lo the Mauriceville Road Board to impound from the County roads. FIXAXCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee's report was read and adopted. EXPENDITURE Or THIRDS. From tho Commissioner of Crown Lands re tho proposals of tho Council for expenditure of thirds, Referret! to Cr Smith and the Engineer, smith's foot bridge, The special rate was confirmed for thii work. engineer's report. The Engineer's Report was read. The Clerk was instructed to send a copy of the Engineer's Estimate to the Oasfclepoint Road Board, and request theni to state what they aro prepared to contribute towards road maintenance in ridings, and send a statement of deficiency of funds available from separate county rate. RIGUT TO TAKE GRAVEL. The Engineer was instructed to interview Mr Mcßae, re procuring gravel from Rowland's Estate for repairs to roads in Mungapakeha. TENUI FOOT BRIDGE. It was resolved that any action be deferred for the present and that the ; Councillors for tho riding convene a nveeUng of tho ratepayers at Tenui : to consider the question of raising a < loan to rebuild the Tonui Bridge.
