Wr, agree with the committee of allies which waited recently upon ,ho Masterlon Hospital Trustees, hat a dispensary is desirable in Masterton; but we aro not at all aire that it is expedient to ask the Hospital Trustees to provide the •equirement. Many of us know infortunate neighbours who are not n a position to pay for medical idviceaml drugs, and there would he i willing response to any call made, or special subscriptions which vould enable deserving poor persons o obtain all necessary medical comorts, To a certain extent very nany cases are already'provided for >y local beuelit societies, and by the :ind|y sympathy and free aid which he rae'dioiil profession generally *tends to sickness and poverty: infc there are very many instances I'here a dispensary on the lines ndicated by the ladies' committee vould he extremely beneficial. But is there any necessity for tho lospital Trust taking up this work. Urcady within certain dpfinert and veil understood limits it is an eifecive organisation for tho relief of peoific classes of injuries and disases. If it stops outside the limits o which it is accustomed, it may ose in efficiency all that it would ;ajn by an extended field of operaions, Why should uot the ladies' vlio havo organised, the idea of a lispensary for Masterton oarry jt >ut themselves. In any case a dislensary for Masterton could .not be pened at the Hospital, and on this ;romid we fail to see why the Trusees should provide one. Let the idies who desire to establish a dislensary form a- Benovoleut Society, ollect subscriptions jiiid claim a iovernment subsidy, Tho prpsent forth Wairarapa Benevolent Soiety is only a nominal body .'itli absolutely no subscribers, n/} consisting of delegates from our local Bodies, ' )Y(> do not possess a iye benevolent society in the town, nd therefore we dp not see jyhy one bgujd not be |9rm'ed jEor the, outdoor.
relief of the sick. ' The Masterton Hospital Trustees eyidontly don't want to say "Yes," but are a little timid at crying " No " to the request which has been preferred to them. 'What they should have done would have been to answer, " Ladies, you can carry out the movement you desire much belter than we can. We have already on our hands as much ns we caie to undertake, why do you not 'form a Society yourselves' to provide outdoor relief and procure tho necessary funds by subscriptions and Government grants?"
We saw at the AXM'-to-jutk Masterton Post ixmx. Office, this morning, a voluminous work of reference, published at 'Berne, classifying all the telegraph offices in the wide world. Nearly fifty thousand offices were tabulated in this wondorful compilation, and probably in connection therewith, may he found some fifty thousand post offices Tho annual work' of such an enormous number of offices, manned by probably half a million of intelligent officers, must be almost incalculable. Philatelists have extended the popuhiridea of geography by ravaging hundreds of countries for stamps, but this new index from Berne opens up access to tens of thousands of cities and towns as yet undreamt of, even by the most experienced globe-trotter.
