MASTERTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

MONTHLY MEETING.

The regular monthly meeting of the Masterton School Committee was held last evening. PresentMessrs \\ r . G. Benrd (in tho chair), W. M East hope, W, Pragnell, P. A. Rive, C. li. Daniell, E. Feist and T. Wagg. . MINUTES. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed, TREASURER'S REPORT. The Treasurer reported a credit balance at date of £ls 5s lOd. SCHOOL HEI'OItTS, The Head-master reported 595 scholars on the roll, with an average attendance of 484, being a percentage of 81. Considering the near approach of the annual examination, the attendance has been unusually low, the falling off having been caused mainly by sickness. Tho whole of the classes are doing good work,and if the attendance improves there is every prospect of a good record being obtained at the coming examination, In his report, Mr Jackson nlso urged the Committee to use its best endeavours to induce the Town Lands Trustees to increase the amount of itssupplemontary scholarship, as at the present time the children of poor parents havo not that interest, in the scholarship examinations which they would havo were the amount. of the Trustees' grant larger, It costs about £GO a year to maiutain a scholarship holder which means that a parent has to find £2O a year to pay tho balance of cost. Miss Keeling reported an average attendance of 81 with 96 children on the Infants' School roll. The reports were adopted, ACCOUNTS, The following accounts were passed foi payment:—Z. M. Hoar, £1 9s 2d; j. Watt, 17s 4d; W. Pragnell (paid for labor) 15s; 11. T, Holmes, £2 Is 8d; T. Cox, lis 3d. School Library accounts:—J. Watt, £7 0.9 Gd; Education Department, £2; S. and W. Mackay, 19s Gd. GENERAL, Mr Feist explained that the subCommittee appointed had decided to give •to Mr Jackson and to Miss Keeling, £2 each, for expenditure on Kindergarten appliance, i The Secretary stated that tho trees in the Infants' School ground had been planted. Mr P. A, Rive was appointed visiting member and the meeting adjourned. •
