Tho Handa lalo has arrived frondg Mercury Bay in a damaged condition. _ At noon on Autfust* 2-tth two immense whales approached the vessel, and one dived under her and the other struck tho vessel amidships. with tremendous force. Several planks were stovo in and smashed, and tho water began to make at the rate of a foot an hour. The Captain then decided to throw overboard the dock cargo of timber, with a view of raising the hole above the water-line. The pumps were kept going throughout the afternoon and night, and next day, tho vessel being lightened, the water was got under and the breach stopped by pillows and hides. Tho water was then easily checked. The last seen of the whale which struck tho vossel, was as it sunk tail foremost, a mass of blood, and had it not been that the vessel had a timber cargo, it is believed she would havo foundered | On tho 28th, the Handa Isle fpW in with a heavy gale, but stood tho* test well, despite her crippled condition.
