' A tiro broko out yesterday in the J Seaham Colliery, near Nowcastle. j; Tho engines had only fairty got to 5 work, when abig fall of coal between tho engines and tho tire, buried, tfljf , hose and stopped operations. ™ j Tho fire is still burning. _ All tbo men got out safely, though . one bad a narrow escape and was ; only rescuod in an unconscious state, r August 26. r Tho lire in the Seaham Colliery I had a strong hold when discovered, • and at the time of the fall of the '■ roof, between three and four hundred s yards of tbo main drivo woro on lire, J, and the danger from the roof, dense f smoke, beat and foul air, made it s impossible to check the progress of i, the flames, and as tho (ire was burn--1 ing fiercely and gaining ground 1 rapidly, it was seen to bo hopeless s to fight it. ■ All the miners havo been withc drawn and the pit closed, with a ;_ viow to smothering the lire.
