MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MEETING

Tho regular fortnightly meeting of tho Masterton Borough Council was held last evening. Present, His Worship the Mayor, and Crs Hornblow, Yates, Wagg, E. Feist, and W. Perry. MIXI'TES. Tho minutes of the last meeting < wore read and confirmed, SIfiSIIOABDS: Messrs Kraluigen and Harford wrote asking permission to erect a signboard outside their business premises in Perry-street. G. Arnold wrote asking permission to erect a signboard over the footpath, outside his house at lvuripuni. Permission was granted, subject to the approval of the Works Committee. FIBE-raiiii. D. Pickering and C. E, Daniell wroto suggesting that a fire-well be sunk at the comer of Chapel and Cole-street. ffter discussion Cr Yates moved tho matter be referred to the ■ks Committee. Ct Homblow seconded pro forma, atid the motion was carried, FIRE lIKIGAUE. The Masterton Municipal Fire Brigade wrote asking for an additional bonus of £25 in aid of the Plant and Uniform Fund. Captain Pickering was in attendance and pointed out that the money was badly needed, the present grant of £'2s not being near enough to supply necessary plant. Half the Brigade luid no uniforms at present. If another£2s were granted lie would guarantee to keep the plant in both stations in good order. The Mayor said it was a question of funds. Captain Pickeringsaid the Brigade made application for the sum named annually. The Mayor said it came hard to tho Council to refuse the Brigade, kit they had to be careful, fen reply to Mr Feist the Mayor said that £25 per year was now allowed. The Secretary of the same Brigade wroto asking for the immediate supply of four lanfeinsand a number of grappling irons etc. Cr Feist thought the appliance asked for, would not cost £25. He would therefore move that the things asked for be obtained instead of the grant being made. Cr Hornblow said the Brigades were second t.o none in efficiency in the.Colony, and deserved encouragement, He believed in economy, but thought that tho expenditure was very necessary to keep up the plant; He would therefore move as an amendment, to test the feeling of the Council, that £2-5 be granted. He would not go so fur as to ask the Council to make it an annua! grant, After discussion, Cr Hornblow reduced the sum to £ls, Cr Yates seconding, and the amendment being lost. Finally it was decided to grant £ 1210s. lE. AX APPMCATIOX. 'The Secretary of the Masterton Horticultural Society, wrote asking permission to use the Council Chambers for the Society's meetings. The Mayor thought they could hardly agree to the request, He would move that the Council regrets it cannot do as asked. Cr Perry seconded, and the motion was carried. THE WAIPOI'A BRIDGE. Correspondence re the Waipoua Bi'idge disputed account, was read from the Wairarapa North County Council, the resolution passed at the last County Council meeting being also enclosed. The matter was further referred

to tlxo Finance Committee. a new street. 0. F, Gawith mid dames Wriglcy 1 wrote requesting the Council to pass ' plans of road and sub-division of , Mr Wrigley's properly from PcrryBtreet to Villa-street, the road to be constructed within two years, the ; proposed street to be called fine- 1 Street, To fell bush, remove tiiqber, etc., would take about 18 months, and Mr Wri'gley thoreforo proposed to give bonds that he will the road within the time specified, Cr Hornblow moved that the plan be passed in terras of the application. Cr Tates seconded and the motion was carried, BUILDING REGULATION*, C. E. Daniell wrote asking permission to cover the walls of bis shop with iron, the walls at present being of wood. The Mayor said the proposal ofl Mr Daniell would be ft decided improvement, Ho did not think * there was anything to prevent Mr Daniell doing as ho wished, as the By-law referred to buildings to be hereafter erected, not to buildings in existence.
