MR FRANCIS ABIGAIL
Sydney, August 7. Mr Abigail has commenced a series of articles on prison reform. In the first, he states that the chief cause of the disappointing results of the reformatory character in gaols, is the want of a proper system. Another important causo is that with some exceptions, it is easily seen when you meet a number of warders that the system is manned by the least fitted class of men for such work. Ho does not say all aro unfit for the service, but the majority set themselves to the work of degrading those over whom they are placed. Mr Abigal believes that in most cases, if inquired into, it would be found thattheiractions aro the result of ignorance, as to how to lirmly carry out thoir duty, and yet treat the men as men, and not as many do now, treat them as worse than dogs, j
