SERIOUS EXPLOSION.
Received, AuijustS, OAS a.m. Sydney, August 4. By an explosion on the barquentine Prosperity, lying in Elizabeth Bay, the deck was torn up from end to end, and Pousty, cook on board the vessel, seriously injured. A seaman named John Thomas and a boatswain named Nelson, were slightly injured. The vessel had coal on board, and tho explosion is attributed to'tho generation of gas. Jta Sydney, August 5. The statement of the mats of the Prosperity is, that tho galley must have boen full of gaseous vapours from tho little fire-hatch, which was uncovered, and tho ignition followed ou the cook's entry with tho lamp. 1 One poor fellow was nearly naked, with his shirt on fire. Tho cook was lifted out of the coals where he had fallen after being shot to a great height, with his clothes on lire and in great agony. The waterman who brought off ono of the crew, also caught fire and was severely burned, The vessel looks like a pnnt into which coals have been dumped.
