[TO THE EDITOR, W. 1). TIMES.] Sir ,—ln a leaderette in jour yesterday's issue you slate that a paid cauvassei employed by Mr J l ]. I'eist and his friends is going about Masterton obtaining signatures to a petition against the Masterton Trust Lands Empowering Hill, under false pretences, tlio said false pretences being that if the Town Hall is erected the Trust Lands Trustees will hare to hue the people. Allow me Sir, to give the statement an unqualified denial. Whoever gave you the information is guilty of direct falsehood. The only grounds on which 1 have solicited signatures to the petition are these; the diversion of the funds from the legitimate object for which the Trust was constituted, and the saving of expense in taking a poll, advertising, etc., if the Bill did not pass.
