If tlio lire (to* be limited to the upper levels, ajf if there is no subsidence of the timbors of the lower levels, the danger will bo minimised, as it is intended to ccasoworkin this portion of the mine. 70,000 gallons of water per hour have been pumped into the mine. The work of putting in blasts down the ground to smother the lire, is attended with great danger, especially in the neighbourhood of tlio overlapping wall, as settlement is constantly going on. About mid-day an overhanging cliff gavo way, and the men engaged there, had to abandon their tools and ■knrry away for their lives. Within (in hour, a yawning chasm showed between the rock and the solid ground.
