In the New Zealand The Times of Tuesday last, Cheviot we had an imaginary Estate picture of prosperity, painted of the Cheviot Estate. The colouring was indeed taken from a Government return, but it has come to be understood that such returns now-a-days are made to order or kept back to order, as tho case may be, and that they are not to bo depended upon, The Government organ declares, on the basis of these misleading returns, that tho estate lias yielded a handsome profit, which is ridiculous, because too much was paid for it in the first instance. Money has been subsequently mis-spent on roading it, and in times like these, errors of this description must inevitably yiold
a loss not a profit. A true picture of Cheviot at it is, bj'a'trustworthy eye-witness, is published in another column of this issue, which gives the lie to tho official records. Can any of our readers, afterperusing it, declare that the Cheviot settlement is other than a ghastly failure ?
