TERRIBLE LOSS OF LIFE.
Rome, July 31. As tho result of a collision between two Italian steamers in the Gulf of Spezzia. one hundred and forty-eight people have been drowned. Earned, July 23, OAo a.m. Rome, July 22.
The Marin was bound from Naples to Genoa, and was conveying emigrants to River Plate. The collision occurred at 1 o'clock in the morning. The look-out on board tlio Ortigia did not see the oilier vessel until it was impossible to avoid an accident. Tho force of the impact was terrific, the stem of the Ortigia being driven 18ft into the starboard quarter of the Maria. The majority of those on board the Maria, were asleep at the time, and as the steamer sank in three minutes, there was no chance of escape.
Tho Ortigia's bows were badly stove in.
This vessol sank a French stoamer on tho samo spot upon tho previous voyage,
