Wairarapa Daily Times. [Established 1874.] TUESDAY, JULY 2, 1895. THE LAND WE LIVE IN.
Mil O'Hkkax wants tho land we live in to bo called Maorihind, and the ()tw/o Daily Times, chatting about his aspiration, says" the Maori names are no doubt wood ones, Aotea for the North Island is pretty in form and in sentiment, and also manageable, but it is apt to be sadly mispronounced. Waipounamu for the South Island is somewhat uuwieldly in the mouth of the European. There are other Native names for both these islands, but they arc seldom used. Northland and Southland would be simple, convenient, and expressive mimes; they have the advantage of being good English. The latter would displace the name of a county, which, however, might well adopt its own pretty Maori name, iMurihiku. It must bo remembered that these changes would not displace the Maori names anymore than they are now displaced." ]Ve rather fail to see any valid reason why there should be any change at all. This country is known throughout the civilised world as Now Zealand, and under this name it has enjoyed a fairly good reputation. It has paid its debts, treated the Maoris fairly, and sent every year to the Mother Country a very respectable amount of produce, Ueally great men have been amongst its founders and builders, and though they aro not with us now, having departed either to " the bourne from which no traveller returns" or lo tho somewhat less remote precincts of the English metropolis, they are still a pride and delight to Colonists. This mania for changing names is an absurdity. Wo might perhaps in a similnrspirit improve upon the names of our prominent statesman. Why not bring down an act of Parliament to convert tho name of Sir George Grey into that of tho Marquis of Mistletoe or of Mr Richard Seddon into that of Richard Omnium ? Both of these public men would probably prefer the names under which tliey have fought their way to fame and their friends would not care for them under another title. When New Zealand becomes disgraced in the eyes of the world it will uetime enough toputitssliame under tho cover of a new name. Till, then, it would be foolish to make any alteration, Even if a change were made, outsiders fqr the next ten years would still call the place" New [Zealand," and after all t'NowZea- ! land" is neither a bad por an inappropriate name, and even the cleverness of an O'Regan fails to find a better.

The following letter was read at the meeting of the Timaru Borough Council (says the Herald), on Monday night, and evoked some remarks from the Mayor: -"Timaru, Jtine2l.—Mr I!. 11. Lough.' —Sir,—Your threatening note of June | 20, just jo hand, grieves me with exceed- , i«g grief, when I cannot always promptly meet the pressing claims of tshjlock. L know that the bond is greatly overdue, but still, you hold security in shop and buildings, for fourfold the amount I owe you. I have no richly laden argosies hound for Tripoli, lo be devoured by water-rats and pirates. Your security is sounder far and safer. It consists of lirst-class ut ell-built bricks and mortar, securely laid upon ihe solid clay of Timaru. Why should you therefore make yourself a man of angry words and strife, simply to sue mo for « paltry year or so's arrears in rent. It is not just, it is not merciful. Had I been rich, like old—(initials given)—you would have given me, aye fuli four years to pay it in, and then you would have craved it off me as a boon, before considering a reduction. I pray tlicc, then, content thyself, and give me time. I'll yet redeem the bond." _ A strange incident is told in connection with the work of clearing away the debris of a recently-wrecked bridge. One day a diver remained beneath the surface for more than an hour. As he did not answer any of (lie signals much uneasiness was felt. At length the diver who was to relieve him repoitcd for duty, and was at once sent down to ascertain what was wrong, In a few minutes both men came up. The first diver had been found seated on a pile of iron fast asleep. Nearly everybody knows what " a catch line " is. A business firm having a range of commodities at ascending prices, makes a speciality of one particular article at a popular price. To do this, even a fair and legitimate profit is sometimes abandoned, and (lie goods are sold at cost, or less. Practically, the firm, acting on the principle of setting a sprat to catch a mackerel, makes its reputation with the decoy, but expects to get a necessarily larger profit out of tho other goods of the scqes which the public are induced to buy.
