St. MATTHEW'S BAND ENTERTAINMENT.
♦ Notwithstanding the extremely uupropitious weather, last evening, a large number of people braved the elements, in order to give a helping hand towards the funds of St. Matthew's Parish Baud. The schoolroom presented a pretty appearance, being draped with flags and curtains, and the programme placed on the boards, was certainly one of tho best and most varied wo lmvo witnessed this season, The various items were interspersed with tableaux, and the beautiful colored lights, carefully manipulated by Messrs Jago and Eton, gave a very pretty effect. The Maypole Dance also proved a great attraction, and the little ones had to repeat their pleasing performance, at the request of those present. The children looked very pretty in fancy costumes, and their instructress, Miss Corbett, must have spent a deal of time and trouble, in getting them to such a state of perfection. Musical selections were rendered by Mr Keaisley's orchestra, Mr 13. P. 'Ginders, Mr J. Arthur, and the Gray Brothers; and the Elkins family again showed their ability by takinga conspicuous part in theprogramme,'Master ArthurElkins played a violin solo.Miss and Master Elkins a violin duet, and Master Alf. Elkins received an ovation for his song " The Old Arm Chair." Songs were pleasingly contributed by tlie following ladies and gentlemen, and the majority were encored: —Misses 0. Jago, Corbett, Craii, and Prentice, and Messrs Langton, C, Ginders, Sellar, and Lilly. A humorous dialogue by the Misses Joyce, entitled " Fanny Jams," proved very amusing, and an encore was demanded. TheEev A.C. Yorke gave a recitation, which fairly convulsed the audience, and thanked those present.on behalf of the Band, for stirring out on such a cold and dreary night. The long programme of twenty-oneitems was considerably extended by the numerous encores, but, by good management, there were no delays, and the evening's amusement concluded in good time. A special word of praise is due to the Jfisses Costley, who took a very active part in arranging the tableaux for the entertainment.
