AMATEUR ATHLETES AND THE PREMIER.
By Telegraph,—Press Association. Wellington, Monday.
A deputation of representatives of various Athletic Associations waited, on Mr Setldon this morning, and asked that the Government sjmld have drafted and introducedPß a Government measure, a Bill (1) To enable any Amateur Athletic : Club to register for a small fee, and \ thereby become incorporated and capable of holding property; (2) To enable any Association of such Clubs to become similarly incorporated, so as to possess property aud recover .. their funds from defaulting officers, and to sue and be sued.
Jlr Hobeu, who acted as spokesman, said the deputation represented forty or fifty thousand members of Athletic bodies.
The Premier in replying expressed his admiration for athletics as a. factor for the good of the nation, but was afraid that in New Zealand they were being carried slightly to nn extreme, and young men were sacrificing to athletics their thoughts for the after walks of life. He admitted there should be some legal protection for the property and funds of clubs, and if the bodies interested would draft a measure lie was prepared to give it favourable consideration ; in fact ho would place it wire the House and ask them to pas Fit. The Government could not undertake to draft the bill as it would contain so many details with which, only the parties interested were conycrsant.
