Wairarapa Daily Times. [Established 1874.] TUESDAY, JUNE 18, 1895. TEN O'CLOCK LICENSES.
[ The trade audits friends in Pahiatua • and Kkotaluiiiiiiira indignant because I eleven o'clock' licenses have been • granted in Ifasterton and only ten o'clock licenses in thuUush. They further add that whereas their Commissioners helped Mastcrton to the later hour, the Commissioners down this way did notreciproeatobyassisting Pahiatua and Ekclalmn'a publicans to obtain their hearts' desire. Next year the publicans, who are supposed to run the Commissioners, will make Jlnslcrlon too the line unless eleven o'clock licenses he accorded to them. The public at Paliiatua and hiketabnna have reason to be grateful for their (en , o'clock licenses. IUI eleven o'clock ' been granted, additional police pro- | lection would undoubtedly have been necessary. We know by experience in Jfasterton that with ten o'clock houses tho police can control the trallic, but that they cannot do so with eleven o'clock houses. Tho police do not control the trallic now in this town and"' lliey are not to , blame. They asked tho Commis- , sioners fora ten o'clock closing and , the Commissioners refused their request. The Commissioners are in our opinion responsible for a good deal of unnecessary sin and iniquity which is wont tc attend tho ill-regulated liconsed I houses, If they don't know that continuous breaches of the Licensing Act take place in this town, and that the police are pmptioally ppwerless to stop then), (.hey are about the only persons in the community " who are in the dark. We had a short trial of teu o'clock closing in Masterton some time ago, and it gave general satisfaction. Even tho customers of tho publicans latlior liked having to go home at a timely ,J hour, and the publicans themselves, if they did not earn qujte so much . money, got a good night's rest. We hopo next year the Commissioners will agree to ten o'clock all round, and giro tho police a fair clianco to j control the liconsed houses. 1 Our Pahiatua conThe , temporaray says LocAi/ that this new Bill Bodius Bill, is "cradled in darkness," hut the 1 Woodmlk Examiner professestobave pierced tho gloom, and affirms that : the Government intend fo abolish i all Oouuties, all Borpijglis,' find (ill Road Boards which havo it loss
population than 4000. What will the Liberal Mayors of Greytown, Cai terton, and Pahiatna, say to this ? When the fell swoop comes, there will be little left standing, between Woodville and the Riuiutaka, excepting two counties, and possibly the town of Mastcrton. If this is to be the principle of the Bill, it will bo a criminal act on the part of Mr Seddou, to bring down this measure as a coim-d'itut.
