Deller; Secretary. W. McKenzie.

Although the weather in the morning wns threatening, the rain kept off yesterday, and a large number of people from all parts of the ' district attended the Steeplechase, held at Clareville. The early part of theday was bitterly cold, g- but after lunch the weather was per- *• feet. Tho stand was well patronised, particularly by tho ladies, who attended in considerable numbers. was arranged for tho 4 thorough convenience of visitors.and the greatest credit is dus to tho courteous Secretary (Mr W McKenzie, of Carterton) and all the officers, each being at his post and attending faithfully to his duties. Messrs Bright and Morrison's starting machine was used with very good results, and its working was very favourably commented upon. The racing generally was interesting, although the fields wero not large, and some close finishes were witnessed, The Dromedary, cleverly ridden by Seccombe, proved her worth again, and won the chief event of the day, although perhaps the most exciting was the win of Lord John after falling three times, his rider, Taggart, remounting and recovering his position in a «anner truly marvellous, His in was therefore most popular, and when Lord John was led up to the paddock, Taggart received such an ' ovation as seldom falls to the lot of a jockey. He deserved it, however, for a neater piece of steeplechase work has never been seen in these ■ parts, and probably never will be \ seen again. Two accidents occurred, the rider of Kaikaa (Collins) getting a nasty shaking, and Harold Welch, ' on Two-up, coming to grief at the first hurdle past the stand. At first the gravest fears were entertained regarding his condition, but it is now thought that his injuries are not of a very serious i nature. A few other spills occurred, i but neither horses nor riders suffered ■ thereby. Altogether the day's sport , was good, and the Secretary is to be ; congratulated on the result of the i Hunt Club's first Steeplechase Meet- ' ing at Clareville.
