MAKURI WILDS.

, From Our Own Cormpomlenl, ; Matters are rather quiet at Makuri, ; money is scarce, and very little i labour employed, most of the men ; are away, working at Pongaroa, our i rival township. The Makuri-Aolianga Bridge track is almost impassable. Mr Webb, of Pahiatua, has pur- ■ chased, at auction, the estate of the . late Mr 11. Beattie, hero. Settlers are anxious for the : Government to take over the ilakuri roads, as tho present control is inefficient. Tho Gorge road is on the shady side, and will always be a source of bother. Had the road been made on the sunny side, the cost of a bridge over the Makuri river would have been less than the sum required at tho present time to keep the road in repair. The football match between the Makuri team and the Ngaturis resulted in a victory for the Makuri ' men. A notable Masterton sportsman, has been spending a week in this district, and has had very fair sport amongst the pigeons, kakas, pigs, rabbits and ducks, Pheasants are scarce. Rather an amusing story is going 1 the rounds of a settler who lives alone in a whare, somo distance from the township, and who had been in luck's way, and bad shot a ' line cock pheasant, and hung it in a 1 conspicuous place—outsido the ' whare—to excite the envy of passers i by, but who went to work without taking proper precautions to secure i his property, so when he returned I at night from work in hungry anti- > cipation of supper oif roast pheasant i was grieved to find thepheasant had [ been taken and a rabbit bung in its ! place, with "Fair exchange no ) robbery" written above it. The i following night ho was invited to >' dine with a,friend, and roast pheasant i was served. ' An advertiser requires a good plaiu cook and laundress, Messrs Simriis & Mowlem add 50 2- . year-old steers and 183 good lamhs to ! the list of entries for their next slock sale, in their yards, on Wednesday, 19th iust. We are now in a position to stale (says : the Foil) that Mr J. C. Hanna, until j recently tho General Manager of the , Bank of New Zealand Estates Com- ' pany, has beon appointed Manager of the Wellington Branch of t]ic New 1 Zealand Insurance Company. It is " proposed that Mr Bolam shall act as Assistant Manager at Wellington pending another Branch opening.
