THE SHOP ACT.
5 THE GREYTOWN APPEAL 1 CASE. 1 By Telegraph—Press Association. i Wellington*, Wednesday. In the appeal, against the conviction under tho Shop Act, from Greytown, Judge Richmond held there was nothing in tho contention that " January next" in the Act, meant - January 1896. Such interpretation i violated the ordinary rules of \ * a grammatical construction, and primmfotm 1 jacie t every instrument speaks s its date, or the time executed. v> There was another objection, howt ever, which His Honor considered fatal. The meeting of the Borough Council had been insufficiently advertised, as one advertisement was too late, and the others premature, because, at the time inserted, the Act was not in operation. The conviction was therefore quashed. i No costs were allowed.
