FOOTBALL.

0,, [llY DAMOCLES,] ts, d. Masterton v. Carterton. hi Tho Banner match between tlu r- abovo teams was played on the Pari is Oval on Saturday, resulting in a .•e victory for Masterton by sixteen ut points to three, A large nuinbei w of spectators were present, but the it, game was not by any means a of brilliant one, although the ground Br could not have been in better trim in for a scientific display of football, r- If the Masterton backs had been 3r worked properly, there should have t, been no trouble in doubling the le score, but the little passing that was k. tried was wild and erratic, and oftenid times more ground was lost than y. gained. Tho difference in the scorrc ing would denote a one-sided game, c. but this was by no means tho case, tho ss play for the most part was very even, m Carterton being more often on the ie aggressive, It was only tho dashil ing individual play and scoring in abilities of the Masterton forwards, io combined with the weakness of the ). Carterton backs, that secured the is victory, Carterton had numerous chances of scoring, but generally Id threw them away by reckless play, whilst Masterton took advantage of (1 every opportunity, and scored. Soon [ s after the commencement of the game, Booth, by fast following up, ;. scored their only try. H. Perry iv shortly afterwards 'equalised by ,;} obtaining the ball from the scrum, Is and dashing across the line at the corner (lag in splendid style. From ;s a free kick, Emmclt placed a pretty s goal, leaving Carterton three points behind at the end of the first spell. In the second, Watson and Johnston scored tries, both being converted by Enimett, one of which was from an extremely difficult angle. For the winners, Watson, Jj\ Johnston and Perry played the best '' games. Flemming, ut new three- ' quarter, mado a good impression, playing a line defensive game, The '• skipper (JlcGovern) was again r severely handicapped by wretched " passing, and as a result sevoral ■ chances wore lost. Voyce com--11 pletely lost his reputation as a full a back, For Carterton, H. Tally, ' Cad, Merewood, Allen, and Booth were the most conspicuous. Mr A. E. D'Arcy acted as referee in a very [ fair and impartial manner. Greytown v. Stars, i | The mulch played at Greytown on ' Saturday is described as one of the ! finest expositions seen on the r ground. The result—a well-earned ; victory for Greytown by seven points ' to three—shows how evenly the 1 teams were matched, and the large ' number of spectators were well rewarded for their attendance. Tho Stars were without the services of ' Owen and Braggins, and although 1 the team was weakened considerably, J they had excellent substitutes In [ D'Arcy and Jeffries. The play was ; open and merry from start to finish '_ the Greytown team having slightly ' the advantage in the first spell. The Star backs showed splendid form, \ and the lino passing rushes were a treat to witness. The home forwards were a rattling set, and time after time broke away with the ball in ; front of them, severely trying the defence of the visiting backs. The Stars were quite equal to the occasion, and their pluck and ability in stopping the career of the weighty forwards drew forth the applause of the crowd. The victory was gained by a goal kicked from a mark, and a splendid try gained by Brunton, Thompson drew blood for the Stars, dodging his opponents in pretty style, and crossed the line. Tho victors had the best team they have placed in the field this season, and every man played a rattling game, McMaster's inclusion as five-eighths I with Maguire as half, is a great i improvement in the hack division, and the ball came away from the scrum like clockwork, giving the ' backs a far better opportunity than usual to shine, All the forwards j do their duty, and in this department Greytown has undoubtedly the strongest combination in the' district. The Stars, with such a team against them, played a wonderful game, and theirsupporters were quite satisfied with the close result. Their back play was almost perfect, and the forwards, one and all, worked hard and determinedly throughout, in fact, overy member of the team deserves the utmost credit. The : game was played throughout in a thorough friendly spirit, any unusual roughness being' conspicuous by its absence, Mr Card officiated as referee, and his strict and thoroughly impartial decisions, denote him as one of the best football '< judges in the Wairarapu, and his j services should be claimed in all the principal matches. Greytowx v. Stars (Juxioks.) This match was partly played on the Lansdowne Ground on Saturday, the result of about an hour's plav being a victory for tho Stars by 16 points to nil. Tries were obtained by Stoddart, Fred Dorset (2), and Frank Dorset, two of which were ] converted. The Stars were far too smart for their opponents, who, shortly after the second spell started, and more scoring seemed inevitable, marched off tho ground, having i apparently had quite enough" Although the Stars won, they played anything but a good game, combination not being thought off, and reckless and faulty passing being the order of the day, Greytown had ' very little show of making a stand, and their poor display apparently disorganised the Stars, who all , seemed anxious to have a " cut in" ] at scoring. Mr McKenzie acted as referee. • i KorAHITAXSI v. Featiierston. ' An exciting match was played in Foatherston on Saturday between , Kotahitangi and the local team, in competition for the Junior Cup. A ! very fast and evon game resulted in '. a victory for the Natives by three points to nil, tho only score being obtainod by Frank Falkner. NOTES.
