Wairarapa Daily Times. [Established 1874.] WEDNESDAY, JUNE 5, 1895. THE WARD RECEPTION.

Tin; reception of Mr Ward, in Wellington, next month, must necessarily boa. cordial one. Ho bus undoubtedly raised the financial pmtiijc of the Colony in London, and created, in influential circles, a favourable opinion of the prospects of this Britain of the South. Kverybody is disposed to like Mr Ward, anil if things were permitted to take their natural course, there would be a good deal of spontanioty in the coming reception. Unfortunately, the Government appear to have considered it worth while to boom his arrival. When the Government desires to do something unofficially and irresponsibly, it usually employs a well know Jackal to effect its purpose. In the present instance the Jackal wussettoworkfoorgiinise a leceplion which would popularise the administration generally, A trustworthy Committee ofMin'istcrial devotees was-soon found, and a canvass was made to secure outside support. The Mayor of Wellington was speedily hooked and landed, but some difficulty appears to have occurred with the mem bers representin? the City. Mr Bell was partly caught, but somehow got oiF tbo hook again and cannot become a capture. Still, the reception is likely to be a success, as the full strength of the Liberal Party will be on tbo committee, and even if the Opposition are left alone they too may put in an appearance. The mistake made has been an evident attempt to boom a reception which would be quite good enough without any artificial forcing. The Opposition members rather like and esteem llv Ward personally, and they do full justice to the tact and ability which he has displayed during his recent visit to London, but they do not care to bo dragged at the chariot wheels of tbo Government in the ovation which is being prepared, At the same time they quite approvo of a cordial reception being oxtended to Mr Ward upon his return. Thoro are two opinions now as to whether the Government ought to indulge in a day of rejoicing or a day of humiliation, but it is quite unnecessary to make Mr Ward's arrival either a national feast or a national fast,
