MASTERTON MUNICIPAL FIRE BRIGADE.
ANNUAL REPORT.
The following rcpor t of tho Mastorlon Municipal Fire Brig ado, was submitted last night to tho Borough Council : To His Worship the Mayor and Councillors. Sllts,-I liavo the honor to submit tho ninth annual report of the above Brigade for the year ending April 30th 1895. The calls for lira during the year numbered 19 m against 20 for 1894, and woroft follows:-Fires in buildings, ?j chimney fires, 9; rubbish lires, 2; false alarms, 3. The value of property attended by the Brigade was £l,lOO, insured for £625 ; tho claims paid by insurance companies totalled £lß2los, thus showing tho Brigade saved for the companies alone £442105. Damage donoby fire and water during tho year amounted to £741105. Tho membership of the Brigade has been fully kept up during tho year, there being 23 officers and firemen at the Mastorton Branch, and 21 at tho Kuripuni Branch. The attendance at all musters has been good, and shows an average of 30 members.
The steam tiro engino underwent a close examination by the Govern- ' raeiit Inspector, who took all the s component parls to pieces and he was fully satisfied that tbo engi^j, was sound and in good order Jfflp 1 recommends that in case of accident 1 duplicato boiler tubes and rubber 1 plungers should be procured from. Stand and Mason as it is not possible | to procure them in New Zealand. ' New fire bars are also needed for tbe ■ furnace I would point out the ' great waul of five new lire ladders. 5 Last year tbo Council ordered two ; ladders for Kuripuni butthe brigad 0 ' have not yet received them, ' presont ladders are sadly ou.t of ■ repair, require painting, and should ■ bekeptundercover. New hose is also 1 needed for both tbo Mastovton and Kuripuni Stations. Some of the best buildings in Kuripuni are so far ' from water that tho hose that they 1 have got would not reach the build--1 ings should a lire occur. 1 would recommend the purchase of fon>* lengths of one hundred feet each. The stoppage of the grant to the Uniform and Plant Fund has been a great loss to the brigade and many of the firemen are without uniforms, and the plant has not been kepfcUs it should bo. The brigado has tC stations to maintain and 45 hWen to clothe, and the grant of £25 per annum is not sufficient to do it an d I hope that the Council will'take the subject into their serious consideration and put tbe Brigade on a proper footing. Before closing my report, I have much pleasure in stating that Engineer E. Bragging has carried out his duties in a manner most creditable to himself and the brigade, and I must thank the officers and members of both branches for their attention to all brigade biismoss, and thoir prompt, ness in attending all firo calls I append to this report a comparative return of fires for the last six years by which you will see the bitide. has done good service.-! haYo°tl^ J-b H * r. oMe „ t
