LICENSING MEETINGS.

By Telegraph.—Press Assnciul'uii. Ciihistciiurch, Jlonday. The annual meeting of the Licensing Committee for Christcliurch district took place to-day. _ Applications for renewal of licenses in respect of several hotels against which informations for Sunday trading has been laid by Prohibitionists, were adjourned tiil after these charges had been beard in tbo Magistrate's Court here, viz., Burke's, Prince of Wales, Eastern, Tattersall, White {? Horse), Cavorsham, Now Zealamlor, Royal, White Swan, and Zetland Arms' Hotels. Upon the application of T. Popham for renewal of the license of Coker's Hotel being called, a petition signed among others by Bishop Julius, Revs. F. Knowles.W.Morley, J. Klmslie. H. It, Dewsbury, A. W. Avciill, J, Dawson, A. Mitchell, F, W. Isilt, J. Hosking and Orchard, and Brigadier Hosking and two captains iimla lieutenant (f the Salvation Army, was road. It made certain allegations with regard to the conduct of one of the bars, and tho application was postponed till Juno 24th, when it was agreed that the evidence in regard to tbo peti- j tion should be heard.

With the exception of two cases which were postponed for the effecting of improvements in the premises, all other applications for renewals were granted. _ A letter was read from the Prohibition League, stating that there were few, if any, bouses in the District, which did not possess two or more bars, whereas the Act contemplated the licensing of one only. The Chairman said the Committee had nothing to do with the question, The Committee issued a license for one bar to each house, and if there were more within the meaning of the Act, it was for tho police to take action.

Inspector Broham said the matter was one which had beengreatly discussed. He had himself when in Auckland taken tho initiative, and laid informations under the Act, bat they wero dismissed and the same thing had been the case in other localities. He was of opinion after carefully looking into tho matter that there were no breaches of this seotion of the Act in Christcliurch. If any person thought there was a breach of tho Act it was quite open j for him to lay an information. DiraEDHf, Monday. The City Licensing Bench refused all applications for extentions beyond 10 o'clock.

Napier, June 8. At tho meeting of tho Licensing Court to-day strong opposition was manifest 3d to tho renewal of the license of the Provincial Hotel to P. Gleeson on account of recent events, which had become public property. A largely-signed petition against the renewal was put in, the police also, opposed. After evidence and argument, lasting the whole of the afternoon, the committee by six votes to two decided to renew the iicense,but refused costs to Gleeson.
