PUKETOI SETTLERS' PROGRESSIVE CLUB.

From Our Own Correspondent. The first quartorlj social of the * above Club was held at Messrs Mac- ■» donalds' residence on the Ist iust. " The weather was very favourable, but the state of the roads rendered the attendance of many from a distance an impossibility. Some disappointment, however, was evinced by those present at the lack of courage autl enthusiasm showif by the absent ones, tho' its but fair to add that in some wises other special circumstances arose. The room \m nicely decorated, and all present were intent on enjoyment, as their faces showed, and niuch more real pleasure was derived than from many greater and more ambitious functions. Mr P. Morris (vice-President) began the entertainment with a brief speech—from the throne; : followed by a speech from Mr B. ' Macdonald. The formation of a Settlers' Club at Ekctahuna was noted with pleasure, another was oipocted to bo formed at Makuii in h tho coming Spring; and it is hoped *? that the three Clubs will become affiliated. After a few nice songs the room was cleared for danciuc, until rising appetites became quickened by the odour of hot coffee. ' Then upon adjourning to supper the dobt to Mesdames Macdonald, Scott, and Cederholm was realised. Such a display in a roadblocked bush settlement was gladdening. Ham sandwiches, jam tarts, sausage rolls, fruits, biscuits, and coul'ectionery-all made us sorry for those who did not put in an appearance. The remainder of the ovoning, until midnight, was spent with songs, dances, cards, tete-a-teles, etc., which was allsullleioiitto show that difficulties are worth overcoming; to cultivate that ■ roal proof of sincero anti-pessimism, , sweet temper and kindness; and pro- A mote the Divine purpose of-Poaco on Earth, Goodwill to Man.
